How this calculator works

The APR expresses the yearly cost of credit. It normally sits above the advertised note rate, because fees reduce the cash you actually receive while the payments stay the same.

This tool solves for the monthly periodic rate i that balances:

P − F = payment × (1 − (1 + i)−n) ÷ i

It reports the nominal APR (i × 12 × 100) and the effective APR ((1 + i)12 − 1) × 100. With no fees, both match the note rate.

Fee amounts differ by lender and product, so enter the figures from your own offer.

Frequently asked questions

How is APR different from the interest rate?
The interest rate prices the principal alone. The APR also counts upfront fees, so it reflects the full yearly cost of the credit.
Which APR does this tool show?
Both. The nominal APR is the monthly periodic rate times twelve; the effective APR compounds that rate across twelve months.
Why is the APR above my rate?
Fees shrink the net cash you receive while the payments stay fixed, so the money you did get must work harder to break even.
Which fees belong in the box?
Closing or origination fees paid up front. Leave out late charges and optional add-ons, because those depend on how you use the loan.
